A Parent’s Perspective: How Michael Found His Voice at a Competency-Based School

When Michael’s mom first came to us, she said something that stayed with me:
“I just want my son to love learning again and not be afraid to speak up.”

Like so many children, Michael is bright, thoughtful, and full of curiosity. But in his previous school, where learning was one-size-fits-all, he started to retreat. He stopped raising his hand. He began to doubt himself. And his spark, that natural confidence, started to dim.

Since joining our competency-based private school, everything has changed.

Here, Michael isn’t compared to classmates or confined to grade-level expectations. He learns at his own pace, mastering skills before moving forward. Most importantly, he’s heard. His teachers take the time to know him, not just academically but as a whole person. They ask questions, invite his opinion, and celebrate his growth.

Now, Michael speaks with conviction. He raises his hand again. He’s learning how to think critically, express his ideas clearly, and trust himself. His mom told us the other day, “He’s not just doing better in school. He’s becoming himself again.”

That is the power of personalized, mastery-based education. It doesn’t just change report cards. It changes lives.

At DOTT Academy, we believe every child deserves the chance to find their voice and use it.

With heart,
